Johnson helps Hawks hand Hornets first loss

Basketball Betting Lines

11/05/2008 - New Orleans, LA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Joe Johnson scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Atlanta Hawks in an 87-79 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Josh Smith finished with 11 points and 11 boards, while Ronald Murray added 14 points off the bench for the Hawks, who are 3-0 this season. Atlanta last won its first three games in the 1997-98 campaign.

"I know it's early and I don't want to harp on it, but these three games have been tremendous," Johnson said. "I can't ask for anything better than that. Our offense is going to come. We haven't been playing great offensively, but it's going to come. As long as we keep playing defense like this, we'll be alright."

Chris Paul finished with 22 points and 11 assists for the Hornets, who had won their first three games. David West added 15 points, while James Posey scored 10 off the bench for New Orleans.

"We have to understand it's a long season. We lost a game. We would like to go 82-0, but it wasn't very likely," Paul said. "We just have to find out what our identity is and we have to start establishing it."

Atlanta began the game strong, and used four consecutive jumpers -- two from Al Horford, and one each from Johnson and Mike Bibby -- to take an 8-2 lead. The Hawks held the margin, and took a 24-16 lead after the first quarter.

An Acie Law free throw and Maurice Evans basket began the second stanza as Atlanta assumed a 27-16 advantage. But the double-digit lead disappeared when the Hornets' offense got going and rattled off seven straight points.

Rasual Butler's layup was followed by a Tyson Chandler free throw and four points from Paul to bring New Orleans within 29-25 with 6:05 left in the half. A Chandler dunk with less than 30 seconds left brought New Orleans within three, but Bibby drilled a three in the waning seconds to provide the Hawks with a 46-40 lead at the half.

The Hornets were still down by 10 points in the third quarter when a 10-point run evened the game. Peja Stojakovic hit back-to-back three-pointers, and a West jumper with 6:56 left tied the game at 50-50.

New Orleans fell back by six, but closed out the third with another 10-point stretch, and Paul's three with a little more than 30 seconds left gave the Hornets a 62-58 lead going into the fourth.

But the lead didn't last long, as Atlanta used a nine-point run to get back in front. Evans began the surge with a three, and Smith canned consecutive jumpers before Murray's layup with 8:11 on the clock made it a 67-63 game.

The run took more than 3 1/2 minutes off the clock.

The Hornets still stayed within a few possessions until Johnson's three- pointer with 5:58 left put the Hawks ahead 75-67. Posey responded with a three of his own, but Murray neutralized the effect with another shot beyond the arc.

That basket made it a 78-70 game, and the Hornets didn't get closer than six points the rest of the way.

MySportsbook.com Posts Heisman Trophy Odds

With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.

Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season.  Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.

This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy.  A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.
